"Inward Mission with importers from Japan into the Peanut Area" - Cordoba, Argentina
ProCórdoba Agency along with the Argentina Peanut Chamber are organizing an inward mission for Japanese peanut importers. The purpose of the mission is bringing importers from Japan to know the region of the Peanut Cluster, as well as the companies that belong in it.
The Cordoba Peanut Cluster is a regional economy almost entirely devoted to exports. The Cordoba province peanut industry exports around 80% of the total national exports. Currently, Argentina is the world’s major peanut exporter; being the excellence of its products the main reason for this international prestige.
Within the cluster, there are small family owned companies as well as cooperatives and large corporations. Thirty rural towns in the province are almost completely dependent on the peanut industry, because it is the only significant source of employment. Today, the peanut sector involves more than 12,000 jobs. Additionally, there are some other thousands in the activities exclusively related to the Peanut Cluster: (machinery and equipment factories, phytoterapeutical products, quality control labs, certification bodies, transportation, agricultural engineering, communications, finance and insurance services, infrastructure, science and technology research, among others). These figures may appear modest but in the perspective of these Cordoba Southerner towns with populations between 2,000 and 5,000 inhabitants, the social transcendence of this peanut activity is huge.
This is one of the sectors in Argentina that shows the strongest investment policy in research, science and technology. In August 2001 the Argentine Peanut Foundation was born. It is entirely financed by CAM member companies and conducted by representatives of all of the segments involved in the peanut producing chain. Every five-year period, the peanut industry invests for over 50 million US Dollars within the region. Currently our processing plants have gotten the latest generation technology, considered the most modern and efficient in the world.
Peanuts produced in Argentina are specifically destined to the snack and confectionery business. The products of the industry include:
In order to meet market demands and the requirements in the newest food safety legislation in Europe and other importing countries, in 2005 all our processing plants started to implement systems of food safety and quality assurance: Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and then HACCP systems (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points). Nowadays these plants even have got certifications under BRC standard (British Retail Consortium) and ETI (Ethical Trading Initiative).
